New PopKid Release: Shoplifters - Second Nature LP

Rejoice!  PopKid and Shoplifters ride again!

It's been 4 years since Shoplifters now certifiable classic album Secret Free World was released.  What have they been doing since then?  Resting on their laurels?  Of course not.  Our very favorite people from Novi Sad, Serbia have been hard at work, creating new group of tunes destined to become permanently stuck in your head.  The result is their new full length album and 3rd release on PopKid, Second Nature

We've often said that Shoplifters remind us of early China Drum and that's still the case.  But as always, they continue to impress with guitar lines that will make you think of Leatherface, hooks that hit as hard as anything Snuff has ever released, the sort of intensity and fire you'd expect from Bob Mould/Hüsker Dü and the melodic punk vibes of Big Drill Car or All.

Throughout Second Nature the band uncorks classic after classic, from the hook filled title track “Second Nature,” to the more angular and aggressive “Hungry Lions” to the Leatherface-esque guitar work on “Braced for Fall.” We couldn’t be happier that Shoplifters are back on PopKid. Second Nature will be taking over our stereos for the remainder of 2023 and we hope it takes over yours too.

The record is up for preorder today.  But do not fret, this is a short preorder.  The release date is Friday, October 20th, but the records are in hand and will begin shipping right away.  If you order today, you'll have the record in time for the release date.

New PopKid Release: Shoplifters - Secret Free World LP

Here we are. 2019 and another release for PopKid Records.  2019 is the 25th year that PopKid has been a thing and even though we haven't put out records every year, it's been a really important part of the past twenty five years for us.  Being able to put out this Shoplifters LP certainly feels like the sort of celebratory event that one would want to commemorate their silver anniversary.

Following up on their incredible Forgiver 7", Shoplifters have returned. The boys from Novi Sad, Serbia have turned in eleven songs of the sort of hook filled rock and roll that keeps me up at night singing the songs back in my head.  I think that Shoplifters have managed to string together the sort of melodic vocals that China Drum perfected and have mixed the with energy and pop mastery of Snuff and the bouncing bass lines of Big Drill Car.

It's nearly impossible for me to pick my favorites on this album as I love the entire thing so dearly.  For those looking for a straight forward blast of catchy hooks, I'll direct you to "Eraser," Secret Free World" or "Fortifier."  If you are looking for something a little bouncier and poppier "Overdoser" and "Fortifier" will likely scratch that itch.  If it's something a little more melodic, with perhaps a darker edge to it then look no further than "Between Us" or "Saved By The Bell."  And of course if you are looking for a perfect, anthemic singalong album closer, you'll be hard pressed to find a better one than "Do Better."

I do realize I am biased as I am helping to put this record out into the world, but let me assure you that my love of this record is so genuine.  Even if I had nothing to do with it, this would be my favorite record of the year.  It's hits that perfect sweet spot for me bringing together sounds from the 90s that I know and love and mixing them in with twenty additional years of influences.  I cannot say enough great things about this record.  Shoplifters have hit it out of the park and I can only hope others will like it as much as I do.

This record is available to purchase on vinyl right now.  It would mean the world to me if you would check out the record and pick up a copy if you like it.

New Release & Preorder Coming on Monday, July 15

PopKid Records is waking up from hibernation once again.  On Monday, July 15th we will be announcing the preorder for the newest PopKid release (don't worry, it's a short preorder and the records are already in hand).

There will be a video.  It's all very excited and we can't wait to share these new songs with everyone.  Stay tuned.

In the mean time, feel free to window shop at https://popkid.limitedrun.com.  You never know what back catalog you've missed that you'll want to add to your preorder.

Distro: R.S.V.P. - A Tribute to Broccoli

We have an extraordinary small amount of the new Tribute to Broccoli CD that just came out on Fixing A Hole records in Japan.  Broccoli has long been one of our very favorite bands here at PopKid and this CD is packed with 38 bands from around the world paying tribute to them.

Chestnut Road is one of the bands on this compilation (appropriate since the band is named after a Broccoli songs) and even the goofy band that Alan & I are in (Sun Tan Lake) makes an appearance.  Not to mention tons of others like The Hum Hums, The No Marks, Bows, Short Straw Fate, Cradle To Grave and more.

Probably not a whole lot of places in America to buy this right now, and I can't stress enough we really only have a few - so go buy one and pick up some other PopKid fun while you're there.

New Store on LimitedRun.com

Just a quick update that we've moved our store over to Limited Run (PopKid.limitedrun.com).  The free Big Cartel store just wasn't working anymore, not enough room for our vast catalog.  This also will open things up a little bit for other products as well.  We may start doing just a tiny bit of bistro in addition to PopKid stuff. Not much, but maybe a random thing here or there.  One of those random things is coming sooner than you think.

Anyway - PopKid.limitedrun.com for all your CD and vinyl needs!

Hey, we're making shirts!

It's taken us over 20 years, but we're happy to say that you can finally own a PopKid Records T Shirt.

This vacation inspired shirt will be available on tri blend shirts, in 3 different colors.

We're putting up a preorder now.  We will likely not have these shirts until late February, but we are only having a small batch made.

If you want a specific color shirt in a specific size, we suggest you order in advance so we can have one made for you.  We will probably have a few extras, but we may not have all sizes and colors available.

You can grab the shirts in our store here:

New PopKid Release: Shoplifters - Forgiver 7"

We thought that there probably wouldn't be a new PopKid release in 2017, but we are happy to report that we were wrong.  Please join us in welcoming Shoplifters to the PopKid records family.

Shoplifters are from Serbia, but listening to their songs you might think they're actually from the UK...in 1994. Here at PopKid we first heard of Shoplifters through their incredible album Believe that came out on the mighty Waterslide Records. We were immediately taken with their stormy mix of Snuff and Big Drill Car punk rock. However, for this new 4 song 7", Shoplifters have cast their net even wider and caught a sound that that builds off of their prior work but incorporates new elements.

This time out, you can feel the melodic side of the band come through even stronger. Often it brings to mind early, at their best, China Drum. At the same time, Shoplifters are tapping into a vein of even more ferocious energy than before with a whirlwind of forceful, Bob Mould-style guitar shredding. If you are looking for loud guitars, big hooks and melodic vocals you'd be hard pressed to find a band more up your alley than Shoplifters.

These fine fellows from Serbia are crafting 90's inspired melodic punk rock that is sure to please fans of China Drum or Bob Mould's recent work.  They have a knack for big powerful hooks, loud crunchy guitars and there's even some handclaps thrown in to "Instant Forgiver" for good measure.

Check it out to see for yourself.  We're convinced that you'll agree that Shoplifters are right at home as part of the PopKid family.

Shoplifers also created a video for "Instant Forgiver" that you can check out here:

We're thrilled here at PopKid HQ to announce that we will be releasing the a new 7" from the incredible band Shoplifter on Monday November 13th.

We'll have more news very very soon, but since we've been neglecting the PopKid site a bit, we wanted to get this up.

New PopKid Release - Custody - Blistered Soul 7"

We really couldn't be happier to welcome Custody to the PopKid family.  Here at PopKid we've made it our mission to hunt down the finest bands from all over the globe so that you, the listener, don't have to.  Next up on the PopKid world tour is Custody, hailing from Finland.  PopKid has a bit of a history with that part of Europe and long time listeners will probably hear some similarities in the guitar work of Custody that may remind you of PopKid alumni and Swedish powerhouse Starmarket.

Combine those guitar dynamics with the kind of hooks that would make Samiam blush and you might start to get an idea of what Custody are all about.  But don't take our word for it.  Head over to our Bandcamp page, or just click on the player below and check out these two songs.  We didn't plan on releasing this Custody 7", but when we heard these songs, they were so great that not releasing them would have been criminal.  The 7" was mastered by Mass Giorgini at Sonic Iguana, you you probably can get an idea of how great this sounds.  If not, give it a whirl:

https://popkid.bandcamp.com/album/custody-blistered-soul

The 7" is available on 3 different colors of vinyl for $6 each:

Solid Yellow

(Limited to 101 Copies)

Green/Blue Marble
(Limited to 103 Copies)
Reddish Magenta Marble
(Limited to 103 Copies)

We also have a few limited packs of all 3 colors for the collectors out there.  You get 3 copies of the 7", one on each color of vinyl at a slightly discounted cost, plus you get a Custody Koozie (Kooztody?) if you order this pack for $16.50.

As a special "hey let's get your money's worth out of the postage costs" deal, you can also buy any PopKid Records back catalog 7" for $1 as an add on if you pick up the new Custody record.  Help us clear out some space and raise some money for more new records.

Purchase the record from our webstore here:

I would be remiss if I didn't mention we still have copies of the new Chestnut Road LP for sale.  If you haven't picked that up yet (and if you like bands like Leatherface, Broccoli, Hooton 3 Car or Jawbreaker), now would be a great time to pick up a copy of that as well.  Again, save those postage costs!

Custody - Blistered Soul 7" Now Streaming on Bandcamp

Today we're pleased as punch to release two fantastic songs by Custody out into the world.

If you have even remote interest in the sort of powerful, full of hooks guitar rock of the 90's that was being championed by bands like Samiam, you really need to give Custody a whirl.  Just give each song until the chorus kicks in.  I'm pretty convinced you'll be as hooked as we were.

This will be a 2 song 7" from Custody and you can stream them both right now from the PopKid Bandcamp page here:

https://popkid.bandcamp.com/album/blistered-soul

The actual 7" will go on sale on Friday and will be available in 3 different colors of vinyl, but you can buy them digitally now if you prefer.

Custody also made a video for "Blistered Soul" that you can watch:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?=QsOZGBpqtg

This is a split release with some wonderful labels all around the world, so if you aren't in North America. chances are there's a label close to you that you can pick it up from to save postage costs.

Hopefully we'll see you on Friday to sell you some records!

New PopKid Release - Custody - Blistered Soul 7"

Here at PopKid, we're happy (and somewhat surprised) that we get to announce another new release this year.  Let's just say it has been a long, long time since we've released two records in one year and we couldn't be happier to welcome Custody to the PopKid family.

When Custody got in touch with us, we thought that was pretty neat.  Already fans of the first Custody 7", but having just released the Chestnut Road LP it didn't seem like the best time to put out another record.  Then we heard these two songs and could not say no.  Both are a potent mix of the best parts of Samiam and Starmarket and it was obvious very quickly that Custody fits right in here at PopKid.

The songs will be streaming on Wednesday and the band will also have a video for one of them as well.  On Friday you will be able to buy the 7" from us here in America and from a few other labels if you're elsewhere.  More details on that later this week.

In the mean time, you can also head over to Custody's Facebook page and read their flattering little blurb about PopKid and also get some more information about the other labels that are involved here. See you Wednesday with some music.

Another New Release Coming Next Week

Aloha from PopKid.  We have a new release coming very, very soon.  We'll announce the band on Monday, start streaming some music on Wednesday and start selling some records on Friday.  If you've been waiting to pick up a Chestnut Road LP, it'll be a good time to grab both and save some money on postage.

More info soon!

New Release - Chestnut Road - LPII - Orange Vinyl - Out Now!

It has been 12 years since there was a new release on PopKid Records.  There were times where it felt like we may never have another new record out.  We're both in a very different place than we were 12 years ago.  However, sometimes a record comes along that is just so good, it's impossible to sit on th sidelines and not do what you can to tell everyone you know about it.

This is Chestnut Road's 2nd album.  It's self titled like their debut, but we'll call it LPII just to keep things clear.  The first Chestnut Road album has been one of our favorite albums of the past few years here at PopKid HQ.  This is a band playing the sort of Leatherface/Broccoli/Hooton 3 Car style of melodic punk rock that we love.  Even though the band is from France there is a strong influence of the mid 1990's UK punk scene.  One could make an argument that was the best punk scene.  Tim makes that argument often actually.

LPII is a split release with 2 other fantastic record labels; Brassneck Records for Europe and Snuffy Smiles Records for Japan. If you're in North America, you're on the right website as that will be PopKid's domain.  The first pressing is limited to 428 copies on opaque orange vinyl.  It also comes with an 8 page lyric booklet.  And of course it comes with a download code for MP3s of the full album, because we're not savages here, are we?  All of this for $12 plus shipping.

If you aren't into the clutter of collecting vinyl, you can also purchase MP3s only from the PopKid Records Bandcamp page.  This will only set you back $7, but really, can you put a price on fantastic rock and roll?

Thanks for reading and we hope you enjoy the record just as much as we do.

Chestnut Road LPII Vinyl On Sale Tuesday, March 8th

OK everyone, I hope you've been saving your pennies and collecting from all of the houses on your paper route because after an awfully long time in the making the new Chestnut Road LP will be for sale on Tuesday, March 8th.

Obviously we'll have a bit more info in a couple of days, but the vinyl is here, the covers are here, the inserts are here, the download codes have been created and we are finally ready.  See you on Tuesday!

New PopKid Release Coming Soon: Chestnut Road LPII Full Length On Vinyl

It is with great excitement that I can finally say that PopKid Records will officially, 100% be back in action in just a few weeks time.  We haven't put out a new record in 10 years, but when the chance to be involved in this album came up, we knew now was the time to get back in the game.  An extra added bonus is that this will be the first PopKid Records full length album that we're releasing on vinyl!

Chestnut Road has been one of our favorite current bands here at PopKid HQ.  Ever since they burst on the scene with their 1990's UK punk rock leaning sound (though they're from France) we've been buying every record of theirs that we could.  If you enjoy bands like Broccoli, Hooton 3 Car, Leatherface or other melodic punk bands of that ilk, I think you're really going to dig these guys.

We've put up 1 song from the record up on our Bandcamp page at https://popkid.bandcamp.com/album/lp-ii, we truly hope you enjoy.  We're not going to do a preorder on this album (in general we think preorders stink), but as soon as we have these records in hand, they will be for sale.  We're hopeful it'll just be a few more weeks.

PopKid will be releasing this in North America, Brassneck Records will be releasing it in Europe and Snuffy Smiles will be releasing it in Japan.  Thanks so much to Scott from Brassneck and Yoichi from Snuffy Smiles for letting us be a part of this record.  By the way, having bought Snuffy Smiles records for about 20 years now, it's such a head trip to see the PopKid logo alongside of theirs on the back of this record:

Crazy!  More info coming soon!

Cyber Monday Bandcamp MP3 Discount-a-palooza

For today only, you can download the entire PopKid records digital discography from Bandcamp for 70% off the usual price.  So for $21.60 you can download NINE full length albums and a bunch of 7" singles as well.

This price is only good for today, so have at it.

just go to https://popkid.bandcamp.com and click on any release.  You will then see an option to download the entire PopKid discography.

Enjoy!

Black Friday Week Sale & A Bit Of News

Hey there, long time no talk.  We apologize for the lack of regular updates, but as it turns out when you're an old label like us that doesn't crank out much in the way of new releases, there's not a lot of updating to do.  Rest assured that we are still here, filling orders for back catalog and spending money that could go into pressing records on buying toys to take pictures of on Instagram...

To start, in celebration of the smell of commerce in the morning (and to make some extra room at PopKid HQ for some incoming boxes that we'll talk about in a minute) we're having a big Black Friday sale all week long.  Though probably not the most punk rock thing in the world, I've (Tim) always loved Black Friday.  There's something about the chaos, the firing up of Christmas music and the general proximity to my birthday that's always been fun.  So we're going to celebrate it this year as well.

Until Sunday 11/29/2015 ALL regular priced PopKid back catalog records are HALF PRICE.  We're talking $2 7"s and $4.50 CDs.  Shipping is still the standard flat $4 for however much you buy (shipped int he US) and we implore you: GET THIS STUFF OUT OF HERE.

PopKid.limitedrun.com

We need to make room for 2016 and the 100% going forward, no BS, no more delays, launch of a new PopKid record.  We've said it's coming before, but honestly, it's actually happening this time.  It's a co-release with some other wonderful labels.  It's a full length LP on vinyl by one of my absolute favorite current bands.  It's already recorded, mixed and mastered.  The test pressings are done and this should be fired up at the pressing plant very soon.  Now with the delays pressing plant's have these days, it's still going to be a few more months, but mark my words and watch this space.

Lastly, thanks to whoever made this Black Friday logo I found online.  I thought of the idea and then searched to see if anyone else had already made it.  Sure enough, there it was.  If it's yours and you want credit or demand we remove it just let me know at timpopkid[at]gmail[dot]com.

More updates coming soon!

Unreleased Playground Album & PopKid's Rise From The Ashes

Welcome to 2015 everyone.  It has been an incredibly long time since we've updated this poor little website, but rest assured we are still here, filling orders for back catalog records and planning world domination.

First up is that our friends from Davis, CA have unleashed their long lost full length album into the world.  You may remember Playground from PKD001, the If You Were Me 7".  It's the record that started it all for PopKid.  Playground was also meant to be one of the first bands to release a full length for PopKid in 1996.  No Angel was recorded and ready to go, but the band split and the record just disappeared.

It's a crime, because this album is so completely phenomenal.  If you are even remotely into Jawbreaker influenced melodic punk rock, this record is essential.  The sounds of the 90's are experiencing something of a renaissance these days, but No Angel isn't a throw back.  It's an authentic piece of 1996 finally available to hear.

Playground has put this up on Bandcamp as a pay what you want download.  We strongly urge you to check it out.  In a perfect world, we would love to have this released on vinyl as well.  If the demand is there or if any other labels want to step up and co-release it, maybe that's something that can happen.

In other, slightly more cryptic news, unless something changes PopKid records will officially be back this year.  We are planning to release a full length vinyl record from one of our very favorite current bands.  It's a co-release with some other tremendous record labels and we cannot wait to tell you more about it.  PopKid records is 21 years old in 2015.  We feel old, but we're getting back in the game!
